FAQ's

Utrogestan contains a female hormone called progesterone and is to be used with another medicine called oestrogen as part of the HRT regime. It is used only in women who still have a womb (uterus). Utrogestan is not a contraceptive. If you are allergic to peanuts or soya, do not use this medicine.

The recommended dose is two capsules at bedtime, for twelve days in the last half of each cycle (beginning on Day 15 and ending on Day 26). Alternatively, one capsule can be taken at bedtime from Day 1 to Day 25 of each cycle.

Most people begin to notice improvements from HRT within a few weeks, but this can vary depending on your symptoms, the type and dose of HRT prescribed, and how your body responds. Symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance and mood changes often start to improve within 2–4 weeks, while benefits for energy levels, joint aches, vaginal dryness and brain fog may take 6–12 weeks to fully settle.

You’ll know HRT is working when symptoms become less frequent, less intense, or easier to manage, and your overall quality of life improves, for example, better sleep, more stable mood, improved focus, and feeling more like yourself again.

Common side effects are: abdominal swelling or pain, breast pain or tenderness, dizzy, feeling generally unwell, headaches, insomnia (difficulty falling and staying asleep, poor quality of sleep), irregular or intermenstrual bleeding, itching, missing periods, nausea, tiredness and weight changes.

HRT is not suitable for everyone and carries a number of risks. The following diseases are reported more often in women using HRT medicines which circulate in the blood compared to women not using HRT: Breast cancer, Abnormal growth or cancer of the lining of the womb (endometrial hyperplasia or cancer), Ovarian cancer, Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs (venous thromboembolism), Heart disease, Stroke, Probable memory loss if HRT is started over the age of 65.
