FAQ's

Sandrena contains the female hormone oestrogen and is part of a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) regime. It works by replacing the oestrogen in your body. If you have not had your womb removed, you will also need to use another medicine containing the hormone progestagen. This is normally a tablet taken for 12 to 14 days in each monthly cycle.

The recommended dose is between 0.5 mg and 1.5 mg of estradiol a day applied once a day to the skin on your lower body or thighs.

Most people begin to notice improvements from HRT within a few weeks, but this can vary depending on your symptoms, the type and dose of HRT prescribed, and how your body responds. Symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance and mood changes often start to improve within 2–4 weeks, while benefits for energy levels, joint aches, vaginal dryness and brain fog may take 6–12 weeks to fully settle.

You’ll know HRT is working when symptoms become less frequent, less intense, or easier to manage, and your overall quality of life improves, for example, better sleep, more stable mood, improved focus, and feeling more like yourself again.

Common side effects are: bleeding or spotting, breasts become tender or painful, depression, dizziness, feeling sick or being sick, flatulence, headache, hot flushes, increased sweating, itching of the skin, lethargy, menstrual disorder, nervousness, pain, rash, swollen feet and lower legs, tummy pains, and weight gain or loss.

HRT is not suitable for everyone and carries a number of risks. The following diseases are reported more often in women using HRT medicines which circulate in the blood compared to women not using HRT: Breast cancer, Abnormal growth or cancer of the lining of the womb (endometrial hyperplasia or cancer), Ovarian cancer, Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs (venous thromboembolism), Heart disease, Stroke, Probable memory loss if HRT is started over the age of 65.
