Wegovy, also known as Ozempic, contains Semaglutide which mimics the GLP-1 hormone and signals the brain to feel full, slows gastric emptying, and helps stabilise blood sugar levels. These mechanisms can help reduce calorie intake and promote weight loss.
Wegovy is an easy-to-use, once a week injection. If you are using Wegovy for the first time, you should initiate treatment with the starting dose of 0.25mg. The dose can be increased every 4 weeks. You can inject up to 7.2mg dose for maintenance. Currently, this can only be administered as 3 doses of the 2.4mg pen.
Common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation but these generally subside after the initial weeks. Serious but rare side effects are pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, and kidney issues caused by dehydration.
